Assistant Director of Environmental Health and Safety

Reports to: Executive Director of Environmental Health and Safety

Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Assistant Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) to support the Environmental Health and Safety programs at West Virginia University. Responsibilities:

• Develop a strategic plan for Health Sciences Center environmental, health, and safety programs
• Manage and oversee daily activities of EHS staff, including coordinating and monitoring of EHS programs and services
• Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, including OSHA, WBS, and State Fire Marshal; provide guidance to departments for maintaining compliance with laws
• Conduct and coordinate EHS projects, including conducting studies and guided sampling prior to new projects, conducting air monitoring for asbestos-related projects, and feasibility analysis Oregon testing
• Work collaboratively with HSC departments to implement EHS and ISUEOS guidelines
• Develop, implement, and oversee comprehensive EHS programs, including potable water sampling, air samplings and indoor air quality (IAQ)
• Identify and manage new and potential new workers for HSC operations, including the Senior Biosafety Scientists and Chemical Management specialists

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate complex issues and provide creative solutions
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and lift and carry equipment
