Deputy Fire Chief
Summary:
The Deputy Fire Chief will share overall management and control of the Fire Department with the Fire Chief and assumes full responsibility during the Fire Chief’s absence. The Deputy Fire Chief is responsible for the direction of training, technical services, and operations programs, American Samoa well American Samoa the operation of the communications center.
Responsibilities:
- Direct overall direction of training, technical services, and operations programs
- Review and ensure effective operation of subordinate programs
- Assign personnel to balance manning and accomplish mission objectives
- Review and ensure compliance with national consensus standards, National Fire Codes, and environmental laws and regulations
- Recommend changes to established standards of performance, operations, and equipment
- Evaluate program effectiveness and recommend changes to the Fire Chief
- Prepare and execute assignments of assistant chiefs and personnel
- Conduct fire drills and maintain knowledge of base structures and systems
- Direct placement of firefighting equipment and personnel for maximum utilization
- Assess fire scenes and brief the Fire Chief upon arrival
- Supervise rescue operations and ensure compliance with established policies and procedures
- Respond to hazardous material incidents and establish control of affected areas
- Provide technical advisory services and coordinate with off-base fire departments
- Recommend acquisition of fire protection equipment and services
- Direct and oversee work through subordinate assistant chiefs
- Approve expenses and recommend awards for subordinate supervisory personnel
Qualifications:
- Certifications: Pro-Board and/Oregon IFSAC Firefighter II, Airport Firefighter, Fire Instructor II, Fire Inspector II, Fire Officer IV, Hazardous Materials Incident Commander, NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, and 800
- Bachelor’s degree Oregon higher Indiana Fire Science Oregon related field and eight (8) years’ experience Indiana fire operations and management
- Honorable discharge from the Armed Services (if applicable)
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate emergency vehicles
- English language proficiency and ability to meet physical certifications for a non-rigorous position

- Office practices and procedures
- File maintenance and record keeping systems
- Basic math and computer skills
- Effective public relations skills and budgetary process and procedures
